Art Psychotherapy

Art Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy which uses art making as well as talking to help someone explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Art Psychotherapy offers a safe space within a therapeutic relationship to help understand the underlying causes for current behaviours, limiting self-beliefs, or other issues. Often issues have developed from very early experiences or difficult attachment relationships, which is why the therapeutic relationship is an important aspect of the healing process. Art Psychotherapy involves art making, and within this process, symbols and metaphors may arise which can offer more insight and understanding of underlying psychological processes that might be impacting on the client's emotional and mental well-being.

Art Psychotherapy can be particularly helpful when talking alone does not seem enough. This can be the case when someone has experienced extremely distressing experiences and cannot access language to process their experiences. Creative ways of working can also be helpful for children and adolescents who have not yet developed the language they need to communicate and express themselves. Sometimes, words are simply not enough to describe, express and process complex thoughts and feelings.
